Yerevan: at the spiritual heart of Armenia

Echmiadzin & Tsitsernakaberd

Arrival in Yerevan at 03:25 and immediate transfer to the hotel. Our rooms are already available, allowing us to rest without waiting. A leisurely breakfast and some time to relax follow before our first introduction to Armenia. Later, we depart for Echmiadzin, the spiritual seat of the Armenian Apostolic Church. We visit the Mother Cathedral and the museum of the Holy See, home to some of the most important relics of the Armenian Christian tradition. Among them are the Holy Lance and a fragment which, according to tradition, comes from Noah’s Ark. Lunch at a selected venue within the religious complex allows us to remain immersed in the unique rhythm of the place. Returning to Yerevan, we visit Tsitsernakaberd, the Armenian Genocide Memorial and Museum, a place of silence, historical remembrance and profound national consciousness. The day ends early and without haste — we started our day at three in the morning. At 19:00, a welcome dinner awaits us at a selected Armenian restaurant, featuring local flavors and wine; at 19:30, the traditional program with dances begins, and around 20:30 we are back at the hotel. We will discover Yerevan tomorrow, in the light of dusk.

GENIUS MOMENT At Echmiadzin, we stand inside the oldest cathedral in the Christian world — built just two years after Armenia became the first Christian state in history.

Khor Virap, Garni, the Symphony of Stones & Geghard

The Great Symbols of Armenia

Today’s journey takes us to some of Armenia’s most powerful symbols. Our first stop is Khor Virap, the historic monastery standing before Mount Ararat. This is where Saint Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned before the Christianization of the country, and where the Armenian landscape reveals itself in its most iconic form. We continue to the Hellenistic temple of Garni, the only surviving monument of its kind in Armenia. With special 4×4 vehicles, we descend into the Azat Gorge to encounter the “Symphony of Stones”: enormous basalt columns resembling a stone organ, sculpted by nature. At a local venue, we take part in the preparation of lavash, the traditional thin Armenian bread baked in a traditional tonir oven, and enjoy a rich local lunch. Our final visit is Geghard, the rock-carved monastery surrounded by the dramatic formations of the Azat Valley. There, inside the upper rock-hewn chamber and exclusively for our group, a five-member female vocal ensemble performs Armenian sacred music. We return to Yerevan in the late afternoon and end the day at the Cascade complex, followed by a walk along Northern Avenue, Yerevan’s pedestrian boulevard, all the way to Republic Square in the soft light of dusk. The evening is free for dinner in the city.

GENIUS MOMENT The private choir at Geghard. The rock-carved chambers have acoustics that no concert hall can reproduce — and for twenty minutes, they are ours alone.

Lake Sevan – Dilijan – Haghpat – Tbilisi

The Journey to Georgia

We leave Yerevan and head north. At Lake Sevan, one of the world’s largest high-altitude lakes, we ascend to Sevanavank to take in the lake views from above. The journey continues to lush Dilijan, the quieter, forested side of Armenia, where we stroll along Sharambeyan Street, lined with restored stone houses. We then visit Haghpat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important monastic complexes of the medieval Caucasus. We enjoy lunch in the surrounding area before continuing towards the border. The Armenia–Georgia border crossing is completed on foot at the customs point, with assistance from our local partners and a change of coach and guide. Travellers carry their own luggage for a short distance of approximately 50–60 metres. We arrive in Tbilisi in the evening and head directly for a light dinner before checking into the hotel. The rest of the evening is free to relax.

Mtskheta & the Easter Resurrection Night

Holy Saturday in Georgia

The day begins in Mtskheta, the ancient capital and spiritual heart of Georgia. From Jvari Monastery, we admire the confluence of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers, one of the country’s most recognizable landscapes. We then visit Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, a place of exceptional historical and spiritual significance, and enjoy some free time in the historic centre. We return to Tbilisi for a city tour: from the Metekhi district, we continue into the Old Town and take the cable car up to Narikala Fortress. We walk through Abanotubani, with its distinctive sulfur bath domes, along the Leghvtakhevi Gorge with its small waterfall, amid carved wooden balconies, the Bridge of Peace and the historic neighbourhoods. The tour ends in the early afternoon, followed by an early light dinner at Ortachala restaurant, accompanied by a glass of Georgian wine. We return to the hotel at around 17:30, allowing plenty of time to rest before the long night ahead. Later, we transfer, on a journey of approximately twenty minutes, to the Church of Saint Nino in Tsavkisi: a peaceful Orthodox church outside the city centre, selected so that we can experience the Easter Resurrection service without the crowds of the larger cathedrals. As in every parish on Resurrection night, there are no reserved seats: we stand inside the church or in the courtyard, depending on attendance, with our tour leader keeping the group together. We remain until the culmination of the service and the proclamation of “Christ is Risen”, departing at approximately 00:30–01:00. On the way back to the hotel, each traveller receives a thoughtfully prepared Easter box containing two red eggs, traditional Easter paska bread and a small bottle of Georgian red wine.

Orthodox Easter in Tbilisi

Supra, tamada & the Festive City

After the overnight service, Easter Sunday begins slowly, with breakfast and free time. There is no rush; we let the city move at its own festive pace. At midday, we take part in an authentic Georgian Easter supra at Lisi Wine, in a private space exclusively for our group. The table fills with traditional Easter and Georgian flavors, while the tamada, the master of ceremonies of the Georgian feast, leads the toasts. Homemade Georgian wine served from a traditional clay vessel, water and approximately one hour of live polyphonic music come together to create a celebration that is meaningful, private and far removed from the feel of a typical tourist show. The rest of the day remains free. Tbilisi on Easter Sunday has its own rhythm: families in the parks, tables that seem to have no end, bells ringing from one side of the city to the other. Having already explored the city the previous day, you can return to the places that captured your attention — without a schedule and without watching the clock. For those who wish, a private experience at Tbilisi’s historic sulfur baths can be arranged at an additional cost.

Kakheti: Among Vineyards and Qvevri

The World’s Oldest Winemaking Tradition

We depart for Kakheti, Georgia’s historic wine-producing region. Here, the tradition of winemaking dates back thousands of years and continues to live on through qvevri, the large clay vessels buried in the ground for fermentation and ageing. The family-run Javakhishvili Cellar opens especially for our group, even though the day is a public holiday. In a private setting, we learn about the qvevri method, taste two wines and take part in preparing traditional bread and churchkhela. A generous Kakhetian lunch follows, accompanied by a glass of Georgian wine. We continue to Bodbe Monastery, associated with Saint Nino, and to Sighnaghi, the small walled town overlooking the Alazani Valley. Its cobbled streets, wooden balconies and distant Caucasus peaks complete one of the most atmospheric days of the journey. Return to Tbilisi.

GENIUS MOMENT The first sip of qvevri wine, where the Georgian tradition remains alive and family-rooted.

The Greater Caucasus: Ananuri – Gudauri – Kazbegi

The Georgian Military Road

We follow the Georgian Military Road towards the Greater Caucasus. Our first stop is Zhinvali Reservoir and the fortified complex of Ananuri, one of the most photogenic points along the route. As we ascend towards Gudauri, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic. Weather and road conditions permitting, we stop at the Russia–Georgia Friendship Monument, overlooking the gorge. We reach Stepantsminda, at the foot of Mount Kazbegi. In Delica 4×4 vehicles, with up to five passengers per vehicle, we ascend to Gergeti Trinity Church, built on a high plateau against the backdrop of the Caucasus peaks. The final operational decision is made the previous day, based on official road and weather conditions. If access is deemed unsafe, the excursion is replaced at no additional cost with a visit to the rock-hewn complex of Uplistsikhe, with all corresponding services included. After a warm local lunch, we begin our return journey and arrive in Tbilisi around 20:00, just as the farewell dinner program begins. If traffic permits, we make a brief stop at the hotel; otherwise, we proceed directly to the restaurant, so it is advisable to have anything you may need for the evening with you. Our rooms remain available until the late-night departure the following day. The farewell dinner features local flavors and a traditional program — the final shared table of a journey that began beneath Mount Ararat and concludes at the gateway to the Greater Caucasus.
