It made 264 million dollars in its first weekend \u2014 but for a Greek audience there is a strange sensation: you are watching Homer in landscapes that are not Greek.<\/strong>\n\nThe Odyssey is the <strong>nostos, <\/strong>the journey home, ten years after the fall. And the film begins where the war ends, with a prologue at Troy, before Odysseus takes the road back.\n\nWhat most people do not know is that <strong>this prologue was in fact filmed in <a href=\"https:\/\/travelgenius.gr\/en\/tours-destinations\/morocco\/\">Morocco<\/a><\/strong>. And unlike most film landscapes, you can actually go and stand there.\n<h2>Where exactly it was filmed<\/h2>\n<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"A\u00eft Benhaddou Troy\" src=\"https:\/\/travelgenius.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/\u0391\u0390\u03c4-\u039c\u03c0\u03b5\u03bd-\u03a7\u03b1\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf\u03cd.png\" alt=\"Ait Ben Haddou Morocco\" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" \/>\n\nFilming lasted just 91 days in total, across seven different countries. Among them, the <strong>Peloponnese in Greece<\/strong>,<a href=\"https:\/\/travelgenius.gr\/en\/sikelia\/\"> Sicily<\/a> in Italy, Iceland and Scotland.\n\nIn <strong>Morocco<\/strong> the crew arrived in February and worked at four locations \u2014 three of them easy to visit.\n<ul>\n \t<li><strong>A\u00eft Ben Haddou.<\/strong> The imposing fortified clay village, a UNESCO monument since 1987, became the Troy the viewer sees in the film\u2019s prologue \u2014 the city that falls before Odysseus\u2019 journey begins.<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>Ouarzazate and the Atlas Studios.<\/strong> The backlots of the largest film complex in the world by area, operating since 1983 \u2014 another must-see when you visit Morocco.<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>Essaouira.<\/strong> Scenes on the Atlantic coast, before the crew moved south.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nThe viewer will also see exterior shots of <a href=\"https:\/\/travelgenius.gr\/maroko-fthinoporo\/\"><strong>Marrakech<\/strong> <\/a>and the area of <strong>Tahannaout<\/strong>.\n<h2>The honest warning<\/h2>\nYou will read articles implying that you can go and see the film\u2019s actual sets. <strong>You cannot.<\/strong>\n\nFor the shoot at A\u00eft Ben Haddou, some sixty structures were added \u2014 a temple, gates, walls \u2014 across ten thousand square metres. All of them were <strong>temporary<\/strong> and have been dismantled.\n\nWhat you will see, though, is the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/travelgenius.gr\/en\/maroko-antithesewn\/\">real A\u00eft Ben Haddou<\/a>:<\/strong> \u2014 an 11th-century village of clay and straw, built into a hillside above the river, on the old caravan road between the Sahara and Marrakech.\n\nAnd honestly, it is more impressive than any set. <strong>The reason Nolan chose it was not that he could build there. It was that he did not need to.<\/strong>\n<h2>Why Morocco and not CGI<\/h2>\nNolan is famous for his obsession with shooting real places, and <strong>Morocco gave him something no studio can:<\/strong> architecture that already looks ancient, desert light, and thousands of local extras.\n\nHe is not the first. The same village and the same studios hosted <strong>Lawrence of Arabia<\/strong>, <strong>Gladiator<\/strong>, <strong>Game of Thrones<\/strong>, <strong>Mission Impossible<\/strong>, <strong>Indiana Jones<\/strong>.\n\nMorocco has played Egypt, Jerusalem, Rome, Mars. Now Troy as well.\n<h2>How to get there<\/h2>\nA\u00eft Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate lie south of Marrakech, with the Atlas in between. The route crosses<strong> the Tizi n\u2019Tichka pass at 2,260 metres, which <\/strong>is worth the journey in itself.\n\nBut it is not a day trip. <strong>Promoting it as a day excursion is a mistake <\/strong> \u2014 it means ten hours in a car for a real visit of two.\n\nThe better answer is a <strong>longer journey<\/strong> like the<a href=\"https:\/\/travelgenius.gr\/en\/maroko-antithesewn\/\"><strong> Kingdom of Contrasts<\/strong><\/a> by Genius Travel, which breaks the long route with an overnight stay in Ouarzazate.
